EC passes remain closed

The weather might be clearing, but most Eastern Cape passes remain closed after heavy snowfalls, the South African Weather Services has indicated.

In the latest update today, it was indicated that the weather was clearing over the interior of the province. Only a few isolated light falls have been reported but icy roads and low temperatures overnight are expected to combine in resulting in hazardous driving conditions on the passes.

At noon today, the Barkly pass R58 between Elliot and Barkley East, the Nico Malan Pass R67 in Seymour (Winterberg), the Penhoek pass N6 between Komani and Jamestown, the R58 between Barkly East and Lady Grey, the Kraairivier Pass between Barkley East and Elliot and the R61 between Komani and Tarkastad had been closes.

The Wapadsberg Pass on the R61 between Cradock and Lootsberg and Lootsberg Pass on the N9 between Middelburg and Graaff Reinet had reopened.

The Weather Service has warned motorists to exercise extreme caution on slippery roads.
