Philani clinic reopens

THE reopening of the Philani Clinic this week marks the end to a few weeks without medical assistance for Mlungisi residents.

The Rep reported (“Philani clinic closed” May 5) that the doors to the health care facility was closed following protests by residents and nurses on various issues, including the alleged deduction of money from nurses’ salaries following a disagreement over weekend work and the alleged mistreatment of patients by a nurse who was not named at the time.

Clinic chairwoman committee Nompumelelo Kweza said Health MEC Pumza Dyantyi visited the clinic on June 7 to listen to the concerns.

She agreed to look into the salary deductions and disciplinary hearings, and to issue a report after ten days.

Kweza said the MEC had not yet responded, although the 10-day period had passed.

She said complaints about nurse Nomabhaca Mgulwa had been dealt with, and claimed that she had been removed from the clinic.

Department of health district director, Nonceba Baba, said staff of the sub-districts, districts and provincial would work with those of Philani Clinic to improve it as a health services provider.

“What is important is what we have started and the quality service we are rendering to the members of the public. I appeal to the community members to work with us to take this clinic on another level.”

Resident Nomonde Mguye said while the clinic was closed, she had struggled to obtain medical care for her sickly child.

“It was difficult and frustrating, because I would have to travel to New Rest and I would arrive at a busy clinic. I would end up going home without getting attention for my child. I even stopped taking my high blood pressure treatment.”

Mlungisi resident Nomthandazo Williams said she was happy that the clinic had reopened, as it was the only clinic that was convenient and close to her.

According to a statement made by attorneys representing Mgulwa, the matter was currently under investigation and that Mgulwa had sought the intervention of the MEC on the matter.

“Our client has, in the interim, agreed to render services at another local clinic, as to safeguard her personal well-being and safety,” said Francois Mostert jnr from Dewet Shaw and Baxter attorneys.

“Our client however categorically denies the unfounded, defamatory and malicious allegations made by individuals towards her, and distances herself from the false rumours circulated about her current and future employment at Philani Clinic.”

Mostert said Mgulwa had pursued legal action and would accordingly await the court to properly adjudicate upon the facts.
